It is very similar to electrolysis but instead of using electricity to separate water into hydrogen and oxygen, electroplating uses electricity to transfer, for example, chromium ions onto car bumpers. In this case, yes the metals used are "extremely important" as it is ions from the chromium negative electrode being deposited onto the positively charged bumper.
