The survivors in this novel, based on their dispositions, divide into five factions; Amity, Abnegation, Erudite, Dauntless, and Candor. Every year, all the people aged sixteen years have to to do an aptitude test which matches them to the faction that they are best for. And upon receiving the results, they are free to decide on whether to stay on that faction or shift to a new one.
