Virtualization allows you to run both Windows 7 and Windows XP at the same time while using the same PC without having to reboot into XP mode itself. The function of the external hard drive is as same as internal hard drive (or the normal hard drive). (On a personal note, I use this plugin myself and found it to be one of the easiest ones to install and configure.
